ABOUT THE ARTIST
Varner graduated from the University of Tennessee where he majored in psychology and minored in art. He subsequently joined the U.S. Army where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his Army career, he specialised in medical and psychological service at hospitals. He retired in 1994 with a Legion of Merit award for twenty-two years of service. During his entire career i n the Army, he continued to paint, to take classes and to teach them, and to visit art galleries and museums.
Ernest Varner's work, with his specialisation in portraiture, became well-known over the last decade. In 1994, he was commissioned to paint a portrait of the first U.S. poet laureate, Robert Penn Warren. He has recently published a print, "The Longest Mile", which features a Buffalo Soldier (African-American) and the U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell. Varner was once quoted as saying, " We are at our best when we are being creative. It is at this point when we are most like our Creator."
